Mayor Benjamin F. Stapleton
Mayor Benjamin F. Stapleton (1869-1950), born in Kentucky, was the mayor of Denver for two periods. The first one from 1923-1931, and the second one from 1935-1947. He also served as Democratic Colorado State Auditor from 1933-1935. Stapleton is credited with many civic improvements around Denver, including: The Denver Municipal Airport, The Denver Civic Center, and the expansion of Denver Mountain Park System -- including Red Rocks Amphitheater. Even though he had accomplishments, he also has his downside. Stapleton was first elected as Mayor of Denver on 1923. This election was known to be 'rigged', as he was only elected with assistance of the KKK. Sources say the majority of his voters were KKK members, and that without them he would have gotten nowhere. Stapleton was striving for power; the only way to get it was with the KKK so he accepted it. Additionally, while being in term Stapleton was also a part of the KKK. So what became of this?
